NONDO Kenya Strategic Plan

The Strategic Plan 2018-2022 is another bold stride that we are making. NONDO serves vast arid and semi-arid counties in Kenya: West Pokot, Isiolo, Tana River, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Lamu, Turkana, Kajiado, Garissa and Wajir Counties. Since independence, these areas have suffered decades of marginalization and isolation from the rest of the country. As a result of this, its inhabitants are extremely poor. Occupying the lowest rungs of the economic ladder, however, are persons with disability. Border communities in these countries have over the years had recurring cycles of incursion and violence mostly tied to resources, clans and inter-community feuds. These conflicts have spawned deaths and left behind hundreds of Disabled persons. All these counties have score low indicators when it comes to access to basic social services such as health, sanitation and education. In addition, different communities (mostly nomads) such as Somali, Borana, Gabra, Rendile, Maasai, Samburu, Turkana, Burji share limited resources such as grazing land and water. This increases changes of collision.

Disabled persons in these regions know all too well the tragedy of double-marginalisation: living in a tough terrain with erratic weather patterns and conflicts and also living with disability. Their situation is compounded when they have to compete for the same opportunities with others without disabilities. In this region, disability is viewed as a curse and a burden to the society. Stereotyping, profiling and stigmatization of Disabled persons are rife vices. Sustainable Development Goals have recognised disability. There are specific goals that directly mention disabled persons. As NONDO, we see our role as cascading these global aspirations (SDGs) for equality as well national and regional policy priorities – such Big 4 Agenda, Vision 2030, Agenda 2063, among others – to the grassroots.
